GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel

The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is one of the world’s leading institutes in the field of marine sciences.

The institute investigates the chemical, physical, biological and geological processes of the seafloor, oceans and ocean margins and their interactions with the atmosphere. 

This broad spectrum makes GEOMAR unique in Germany. Additionally, the institute has successfully bridged the gap between basic and applied science in a number of research areas.

GEOMAR has four major research foci:

• Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics,
• Marine Biogeochemistry,
• Marine Ecology,
• Dynamics of the Ocean Floor.

GEOMAR also leads a number of national research programmes, including the Cluster of Excellence 'The Future Ocean' and Collaborative Research Centres (SFBs) that are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Four research vessels, large-scale seagoing equipment such as the manned submersible JAGO, the unmanned deep-sea robots ROV Kiel 6000 and AUV Abyss as well as state-of-the-art laboratories, analytical facilities, and a hierarchy of numerical models provide a unique basis for excellent marine research.

With a number of internationally-based curricula the Institute actively contributes to educating young scientists in the field of marine sciences.

GEOMAR is a member of the Helmholtz Association, the German Marine Research Consortium (KDM) and the Marine Board of the European Science Foundation.
