University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein

The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) looks back on a long tradition in the cities of Kiel and Lübeck. It is one of the largest European university medical centers in Northern Germany. Being the only maximum care center in Schleswig-Holstein the UKSH covers the full range of modern medicine and is among the most important employers and training supervisors of the Federal Land.

It is the clinic’s aim to provide the best medical supply for its patients and to force the development of medical science together with associate partners. A visible attestation for that is the commendation of the interdisciplinary research community ‘Inflammation at Interfaces’, being officially nominated one of the much sought-after clusters of excellence of the federal government. 

The clinic’s capacities are exceeding those of a common hospital due to a close connection of research and health care. Patients benefit from the interconnection of high efficiency medical care and interdisciplinary research since scientific results are directly put into clinical practice. Approximately 2,000 physicians and scientists as well as nursing staff with a capacity of 3,600 people make use of the latest technology in diagnostics and therapy in order to anually take care of more than 360,000 inpatients and ambulants in 80 clinics and institutes.

The UKSH is the only medical center in Germany where two medical faculties – that one of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel and that of the University of Lübeck – are combined. Medical as well as natural scientists are doing research here. They heal and teach at the highest level on an international basis. The clinic offers 3,500 students a first class education in the field of human medicine and dentistry compared to other federal states.

The main focus of research is put on inflammation and infection, clinical genom research, system-oriented neurosciences, oncology, reproduction medicine, transplantation medicine and biomedical technologies such as endocrine control and regulation.

Scientists cooperate with universities from all over the world and give proof of their accredited expertise. Their achievements range from the detection of new molecule complexes to recommendations when it comes to dealing with medical risks and diseases of the 21st century.
