In the field of medical sciences Kiel takes a unique position due to the interconnection of all institutions that are involved in the health care management.

A solid network is not only crucial for efficient medical supply, it is also a trade mark for Schleswig-Holstein’s sanitary initiative.

Inflammation Research

The ‘Inflammation Medicine Excellence Center’ is a special inflammation clinic of the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH). It features excellent research and optimum care.

Physicians from all kinds of disciplines work together on an interdisciplinary basis and exchange their findings with scientists doing fundamental research. They make use of a common infrastructure, i.e. that of both institutes of the UKSH in Kiel and Lübeck, the Research Center Borstel and the Max-Planck-Institut for Evolutionary Biology in Plön.  Thus, UKSH patients immediately benefit from their findings.

Center for Molecular Life Sciences

The Center for Molecular Life Sciences (ZMB) is next to the Bioturm (biological department) of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel.

With an expense of 19 million Euros which was fully covered by the land, the ZMB represents another milestone in Kiel’s scientific scenery. The construction of the 5-story building was completed in spring 2012. 3.100 square meters of floor space including 2.100 square meters for laboratories is at disposal.

High-performance equipment is available for study groups from Kiel University, which means that the interdisciplinary usage of equipment is guaranteed.

In addition, the ZMB enables technology transfer from research to appliance. Thus, university structures can be organized in a more flexible and result-oriented way in order to be well prepared for the steadily increasing standards in the scientific challenge.

The highly variable possibilities of usage make the ZMB most significant for the Clusters of Excellence since they are all able to work on an interdisciplinary level in one location.
