As Schleswig-Holstein's only fully-fledged university with over 27,000 students and around 2,500 scientists, Kiel University (CAU) offers a cross-disciplinary academic environment.

Dynamic priority research areas have developed from between the disciplines in the university’s eight faculties, which appear both in teaching and in research. The CAU uses its research, teaching and the transfer of knowledge to address the great challenges of our time.

 

Die With around 190 degree programmes to choose from, Kiel University offers those interested in studying lots of opportunities to individually design their degrees. Students can select traditional subjects like law or medicine, as well as disciplines such as humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Applied fields of study such as material and technological sciences or agricultural and nutritional sciences offer exceptionally good career options.

Typical features of studying in Kiel include early insights into current research and the specialist foundations for working in interdisciplinary teams. On top of this are open networks, service learning or attractive surroundings by the sea.

Teacher training plays a key role at the CAU. Over 4,000 aspiring teachers are currently enjoying excellent education and training in 21 integrated subjects.

 

In addition to strong individual research, the CAU has also formed four priority research areas: Kiel Life Science, Kiel Marine Science, Kiel Nano, Surface and Interface Science, as well as Societal, Environmental and Cultural Change. Each research area combines the expertise from various faculties - from natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, law and humanities.

The priority research areas are firmly embedded in the university structures and form the basis for the Clusters of Excellence.
